Dodongo's Cavern

There is a heartbeat beneath the mountain.

Solve the Bomb Flower staircase, open the giant skull and prepare Link's magic for the rest of the journey.

  1. Open the cavern

Use the entrance Bomb Flower to destroy the cracked wall. In the main lava chamber, ride the platforms to the lower east doorway and bomb its cracked wall. The map is behind a different cracked wall on the west side.

  2. Clear the eastern loop

Pass the Baby Dodongos; their bodies explode after defeat. Push an Armos statue onto the blue floor switch. Continue to the two Lizalfos and defeat both. In the next corridor, attack the larger Dodongos from behind, then light all three torches with a Deku Stick. Step on the switch at the end to open the west-side route.

  3. Drop the enormous staircase

Cross the lobby to the newly opened west door. In the room lined with Bomb Flowers, place one flower in the empty gap between the two rows. The simultaneous chain explosion lowers the staircase. Climb it.

  4. Cross above the lobby

In the upper room, move the statue blocking the ladder and climb to the switch. Avoid waking unnecessary Armos. Cross the bridge above the main chamber and continue into the blade-trap room.

  5. Break the high wall

Move the block under the ladder and use the raised area by the Bomb Flower. Hold a flower briefly before throwing it onto the cracked-wall ledge so it explodes there. Climb through the opening.

  6. Switch off the platform flames

Shoot the eye above the far door to cross the first flame platform. Defeat the next pair of Lizalfos. In the following room, shoot the first eye, jump to the middle platform and shoot the newly visible side eye to complete the crossing.

  7. Collect the Bomb Bag

Continue over the upper blade-trap room to the large chest. The Bomb Bag lets you carry and place your own bombs. Step on the nearby switch to extend the lobby elevator.

  8. Light the skull's eyes

Stand on the bridge above the giant stone skull. Drop one bomb through each of the two openings so it detonates inside an eye socket. When both eyes glow, the mouth opens. Descend and enter it.

  9. Unlock the last door

From the mouth room, take the right-hand passage around the block puzzle. Climb and move through the loop until you can push the block into the central hole, weighing down its switch. Enter the unlocked room and bomb its cracked floor.

  10. Claim the second Spiritual Stone

Drop into King Dodongo's arena. After the battle, take the Heart Container and blue warp. Darunia gives you Goron's Ruby outside.

  11. Visit the mountain Great Fairy

Climb above the red flag, bombing the rocks in your way. Shelter under the Hylian Shield during the falling-rock bursts, then keep moving. Clear the Skullwalltulas and climb to the summit. Bomb the wall beside the owl; inside, play Zelda's Lullaby on the Triforce to receive magic and the charged spin attack.

  12. Pick up Din's Fire now

Return to the Hyrule Castle approach as a child. Bomb the large rock at the dead-end near the entrance area, crawl into the fountain and play Zelda's Lullaby. Keep Din's Fire: it will open the Shadow Temple later. You can now head toward Zora's River.

AT THE END OF THE PATH

King Dodongo

When he inhales with his mouth wide open, throw a bomb into it. Strike with the sword while he is stunned.

Move onto the narrow safe bank beside the lava while he rolls past. Avoid the lava itself, then repeat when he stops.

Notes from the archive.

  • Do not leave the magic visit until the Shadow Temple entrance; this route collects both magic and Din's Fire while child Link is already nearby.
