NINTENDO 64 WALKTHROUGH · CHAPTER 12 / 14

Gerudo & the wasteland

Beyond the last flag, follow a ghost.

Free each of the four carpenters to earn access through the fortress.Nintendo · original N64 game · screenshot via Zelda Central ↗

Free all four carpenters, earn the Gerudo card and cross the desert to learn the Requiem of Spirit.

  1. Cross the broken bridge

Enter Gerudo Valley from western Hyrule Field. Jump the broken bridge on Epona, or Longshot the wood on the far side. Speak to the carpenter boss by the tent, then follow the path into Gerudo's Fortress.

  2. Work from the fortress's lower entrance

Guards outside capture you if they spot you; arrows temporarily stun them. If captured, use the Longshot on the wood above the prison window to escape. Drop to the ground and take the nearby left doorway into the fortress.

  3. Free the first carpenter

Find the cell and talk to its captive. A Gerudo Thief drops in. Block normal blows and dodge her leaping attack, which can send you back to jail. Counterattack after she misses. Pick up her key, open the cell and speak to the carpenter so he actually leaves.

  4. Reach the upper cell

Leave by the doorway near the freed carpenter. Enter the next opening to the left, follow the interior past its patrolling guard and leave through the right-hand exit. Outside, follow the ledge left, stun the guard above and climb to the upper doorway. Defeat the second Thief and release the next carpenter.

  5. Drop to the lower passage

Take the exit on the right side of the second cell room. Climb down the vines and enter the doorway directly ahead for another prisoner. Talk to him, win the fight, open his cell and speak again.

  6. Find the final cell

Return up the vines and enter the left doorway. Stun the two guards in the lower area, cross it and climb the far ramp to the outside. From that exit, drop onto the lower ledge to the right and enter its door. Wait for the corridor guard, stun her, then follow the right-hand passage to the fourth carpenter.

  7. Take the membership card

After freeing and speaking to all four carpenters, accept the Gerudo Membership Card. Guards no longer arrest you for exploring the fortress. Go to the northwestern desert gate, climb its ladder and speak to the gatekeeper to open it.

  8. Follow the desert markers

Across the gate, traverse the sand river with the Hover Boots or Longshot to the crates on the other side. Follow the line of flags through the storm. Keep the last flag visible until you identify the next; walking into the unmarked desert returns you to the start.

  9. Follow the invisible guide

Reach the stone shelter and climb onto its roof. Activate the Lens to reveal a Poe guide. Follow its path through the storm, avoiding the Leevers and maintaining enough magic to see it. Near the far flags, continue toward the Desert Colossus as the guide turns back.

  10. Learn the route across time

Enter the Spirit Temple and inspect its entrance: the crawlspace is too small for adult Link and the great block is too heavy. Leave. Sheik appears and teaches the Requiem of Spirit. Warp to the Temple of Time, return to childhood and use the Requiem to reach the Colossus as a child.

KEEP IN MIND

Notes from the archive.

  • You need all four rescue conversations, not only four defeated guards, to earn the card.
  • The Gerudo Training Ground and its Ice Arrows are optional. They are not required for the Spirit Temple or the final battle.
